PAST EVENTS AND NEWS

  • April 25, 2006 - Kids Day: We sold 680 newspapers and raised $954.73 to benefit the children of Variety Club. Thanks to all the people that purchased newspapers for the cause!
  • September 2005 - With funding obtained with the assistance of Assemblyman Jim Hayes, we were able to conduct a door to door smoke detector education event. Residents were reminded of the need for smoke detectors and proper installation. Where detectors were found to be missing or malfunctioning, a new detector was provided. Residents residing in the northern part of the district were targeted and received hundreds of detectors and batteries this year with the intent to target additional areas of the district in the future.
  • October 2005 - We have purchased a new fire prevention training tool, The Tutor Fire Extinguisher Trainer, to be used for public and firefighter training.
  • May 2005 - Our company finished 87th in judging for the Memorial Day parade.
  • March 8, 2005 - Kids Day: A record year! We sold over 900 newspapers and raised $1,972.20 to benefit the children of Variety Club. Thanks to all the people that purchased newspapers for the cause!
  • January 2005 - Assistant Chief John Buttino was elected Secretary/Treasure of the Amherst Chiefs' Association.
  • August 5, 2004 - The department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management (FEMA) awarded our department $72,591 for fire operations and firefighter safety. This grant was used to purchase a new electronic firefighter accountability system to be used at the scene of incidents. The funding was also used to update and purchase new training material to continue the education of our members.
  • August 6, 2004 - The Firefighter newspaper, in cooperation with Volunteer Fireman Insurance Services (VFIS), awarded several of our members the Excellence Through Teamwork Award for their life saving actions while at work. Members Mike Boehm, Craig Schreck, David Balduf, Adam Bosch and Mike Flynn were involved in sustaining and reviving a fellow Amherst Highway Department employee after he was found in cardiac arrest by fellow employee Jay Collier. Also assisting were Amherst Highway employees (and area firefighters) Bob Schrader, Chris Ptrie, Kent Richter, Blake Strom and Dan Demerle. The patient has since returned to work from the May 3, 2004 incident.
  • March 13, 2004 - We hosted the High-Impact, High-Energy training seminar instructed by Timothy E. Sendelbach. Over 100 firefighters from around the area attended this training session.
  • March 2 2004 - Kids Day: We sold 570 newspapers and raised $792.62 to benefit the children of Variety Club.
  • January 8, 2004 - Chief Thomas Sciortino was elected President and Assistant Chief Hodges was elected Secretary/Treasure of the Amherst Fire Chiefs' Association
  • November 8, 2003 - We hosted a New York State Association of Fire Chiefs' workshop titled Fire Officer Duties and Responsibilities. Firefighters from throughout Erie and Niagara County attended this seminar.
  • August 15, 2003 - The Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) awarded our department $80,705 for fire operations and firefighter safety. This grant was used to purchase new self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA's) replacing aged equipment.
  • Safety Days 2003 - Safety day was a great success! A large number of residents turned out to take part in our fire and carbon monoxide detector giveaway, fire prevention information, child seat inspections, vehicle identification number (VIN) windshield etching and CPR training. One of our carbon monoxide detectors that was distributed proved to be a life saver by alerting a resident and her child to dangerously high levels of carbon monoxide in their home. The incident alone made the event a success.
  • Kids Day 2003 - We sold over 500 newspapers and raised $733.38 to benefit the children of Variety Club.

INCIDENT WIRE

  • Friday, April 21, 2006 - A second floor bedroom fire at 282 Maynard caused $50,000.00 damage to the structure and contents. The fire origin appears to have been electrical in nature.
  • Wednesday, January 25, 2006 - A chimney fire that spread to the attic at 4367 Bailey Ave. caused $20,000.00 damage to the structure and contents.
  • Monday, January 23, 2006 - An electrical fire at 4276 Bailey Ave. The fire was contained to the room of origin and caused $25,000.00 damage to the contents and the Structure.
  • Tuesday, July 5, 2005 - A roof fire at 2155 Eggert Rd, Consumer Beverages, was ignited by a lightning strike just after 1:00 a.m. Crews quickly contained and extinguished the fire. Damage was estimated at $10,000.00
  • Thursday, June 23, 2005 - A kitchen fire at 180 Greenaway was caused when a contractor accidentally ignited vapors from contact cement. The contractor suffered second-degree burns to his arms and legs. Damage was estimated at $5,000.00
  • Saturday, June 11, 2005 - A car vs tree auto accident claimed the life of the driver and seriously injured her passenger. The accident occurred on Niagara Falls Blvd. and required an extensive extrication.
  • Sunday April 10, 2005 - Structure fire was at 129 Greenaway. The fire was reported by the resident at 4:40 a.m. with a fire alarm logged shortly after. Upon our arrival heavy smoke conditions were encountered as the attack crew located and controlled a fire in the basement. The cause of the fire is still under investigation but is believed to have been caused by a malfunctioning space heater. Damage was estimated at $75,000 to the structure and $50,000 to the contents.
  • Sunday April 10, 2005 - A multiple vehicle accident required the extrication of one patient at Main and Eggert.
  • Monday April 4, 2005 - An auto accident requiring extrication at Delta and Henel found one vehicle rolled onto its side and the patient trapped. Crews quickly freed the victim for transport by Twin City Paramedics.
  • Wednesday March 9, 2005 - A house fire at 51 Meadow Lea Dr. claimed the life of the 54 year old resident. The structure fire was reported by neighbors around 4:50 a.m. and was well involved upon first arriving units. Damage was estimated at $75,000 to the structure and $50,000 to its contents. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries battling the blaze.
  • Friday, January 14, 2005 - A house fire at 430 Capen Blvd. claimed the life of the 82 year old resident and her dog. The fire was caused by improper disposal of smoking material and was burning for hours before the fire department was alerted. Damage was estimated at $75,000 to the structure and its contents. There were no smoke detectors in the home.
